What is Vimovo?

Vimovo MR (Modified Release) Tablets are a prescription medication used to manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, by addressing both pain and inflammation. Vimovo combines two active ingredients: naproxen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helps reduce inflammation and pain, and esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that helps reduce stomach acid and protect the stomach lining from the irritating effects of naproxen. This dual-action combination is particularly useful for patients who need long-term NSAID treatment but are at risk of developing gastric ulcers or stomach issues.

How Does Vimovo Work?

Vimovo works by targeting both pain and the potential stomach problems associated with NSAID use. Naproxen is an NSAID that blocks the action of certain enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) responsible for inflammation and pain in the body. By reducing these enzymes, naproxen effectively relieves pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Esomeprazole, on the other hand, is a proton pump inhibitor that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. This helps prevent the formation of ulcers and reduces the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, which are common with long-term NSAID use. The modified-release formulation ensures that both components are released at the right time in the body for maximum effectiveness.
