What is Zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan is a prescription medication used for the acute treatment of migraines, with or without aura. It belongs to a class of medications called triptans, which are designed to relieve migraine symptoms. Zolmitriptan works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger pain, nausea, and other symptoms of a migraine. It is not used for the prevention of migraines but is effective in relieving the intense headaches, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound associated with a migraine attack.

How Does Zolmitriptan Work?

Zolmitriptan works by stimulating serotonin (5-HT) receptors in the brain. During a migraine, blood vessels in the brain can widen, contributing to the pain and other symptoms. Zolmitriptan causes these blood vessels to narrow, which helps to reduce headache pain. It also works to block the transmission of pain signals in the brain, offering relief from other migraine symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound. Zolmitriptan typically begins to work within 30 minutes of ingestion, making it an effective choice for acute migraine treatment.

Warnings

  • Do not take Zolmitriptan if you are allergic to zolmitriptan or any of its ingredients.
  • Avoid using Zolmitriptan if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, circulatory problems, or have had a stroke.
  • Do not take Zolmitriptan if you are using other triptans or certain types of antidepressants (such as MAO inhibitors or SSRIs).
  • If you experience chest pain or tightness, discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately.
  • Zolmitriptan is not suitable for individuals with severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Avoid using Zolmitriptan if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor.
  • Overuse of migraine treatments can lead to medication-overuse headaches. Limit use to no more than 2 doses in 24 hours and avoid frequent use.

Directions

Use following the guidance of your healthcare provider and only agter consulting the instructions.

  • Take one tablet at the first sign of a migraine attack.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • If the migraine returns, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours.
  • Do not exceed 10mg in 24 hours (usually 2 tablets of 5mg or 4 tablets of 2.5mg).
  • If the first dose does not relieve your symptoms, do not take a second tablet for the same attack; consult your doctor for further guidance.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in each Zolmitriptan tablet is Zolmitriptan 2.5 mg.

The inactive ingredients in each tablet are: Lactose anhydrous, Cellulose microcrystalline, Sodium Starch Glycolate type A, Magnesium Stearate, Hypromellose, Titanium dioxide (E 171), Macrogol 400, Macrogol 8000, and Iron Oxide Yellow (E172).

Side Effects

Few people experience unpleasant side effects when using Zolmitriptan:

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Sensation of tightness, heaviness, or pressure in the throat or chest
  • Flushing or feeling warm
  • Muscle weakness or tiredness
  • Palpitations or rapid heartbeat

Rare but serious side effects include chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of an allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat). If any of these occur, stop using Zolmitriptan and seek immediate medical attention.
